Your Child’s Story Matters
Every child’s learning journey is unique—and worth celebrating.
The K12 Reel Me video competition gives students a chance to reflect on what’s shaped them, what motivates them, and how their learning experience fits into their lives. In just 30–60 seconds, they can share a story that’s meaningful, creative, and entirely their own.
If your child attends a K12-powered school, share this guide to help them turn their ideas into a clear, confident story—and bring it to life on camera for a chance to win exciting prizes, including $500 cash or a GoPro Creator Kit.
5 Steps to Creating a Strong 60-Second Story
1. What Is a K12-Powered Story?
A “K12-powered” story is a real experience—told in your own voice.
It might focus on:
- Growth: How you’ve changed or improved
- Flexibility: Learning in a way that fits your life
- Belonging: Feeling supported or understood
- Creativity: Exploring new interests
- Goals: Working toward your future
There's no single "right" story. The strongest ones are honest, personal, and specific to you.
2. Start With Your “Why”
Before you hit record, take a minute to reflect:
What does this experience mean to me? Your “why” is the heart of your video—the one idea viewers will remember.
Try this:
- Finish the sentence: “K12 works for me because…”
- Think of one moment that stands out
- Keep it real—your story doesn’t have to be perfect to matter
3. Structure Your 60 Second Story
A simple structure helps your story stay clear and engaging.
Beginning:
Presentarte
“Hi, I’m [First Name], and this is my K12 why …”
Middle:
Share your experience, challenge, or turning point
What changed? What did you discover?
End:
Explain why it matters
How has this shaped you? What’s next?
4. Film With Confidence
You don’t need fancy equipment or a perfect script—just be yourself.
- Speak naturally, like you’re talking to a friend
- Use good lighting (face a window if possible)
- Choose a quiet space
- Hold your phone vertically
- Focus on your message, not perfection
If it takes a few tries, that’s normal—most great videos do.
5. Make Every Second Count
With only 60 seconds, simplicity is key.
- Focus on one main idea or moment
- Skip extra details that don’t support your message
- Keep it short, clear, and genuine
Avoid:
- Rambling
- Overexplaining
- Trying to sound “perfect” instead of authentic
Your Voice Can Inspire Someone Else
Your story might be exactly what another student needs to hear.
It could help someone feel more confident, understood, or open to trying something new. And the more you share, the more your confidence grows, too.
Ready to share your story?
Your story deserves to be heard. Start brainstorming your "why," outline your story, and bring it to life on camera.
